Stop Stress & Save Your Smile

With busy calendars and long to-do lists, the holidays can get pretty hectic. This adds stress to a happy time of the year. Unfortunately, stress can cause dental damage. Watch this short video from the Mayo Clinic for some tips on lessening holiday stress. Then check out our suggestions to save your smile:

  • Keep Brushing and Flossing – Routines often suffer during stressful times – and that may include daily oral hygiene. It’s important to brush at least twice a day and floss daily too. If you don’t, you’ll be more prone to cavities and gum disease. That’s especially true now, given that you may be eating more sugary treats than usual.
  • Drink Plenty of Water – Stress often gives you a dry mouth. This is not only uncomfortable, but also makes you more vulnerable to decay and other dental problems. Increasing your water intake can really help. You can also use a humidifier overnight while sleeping. And chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on sugar-free candy also helps encourage saliva production.
  • Get a Mouthguard – Some people grind their teeth when under stress. This can damage tooth enamel and also cause headaches and jaw pain. The good news is, we can fit you for a custom-made mouthguard that will ease your jaw into a position that prevents grinding
